Description

By using a simple maturity model an organization can use this exercise to assess their current digital maturity and set a realistic roadmap. While there are many versions and standards for maturity modeling the one used for the purpose of this demonstration is a widely accepted 1-5, with an example of Analytics as the focus: 1) Immature or Absent 2) Established / Repeatable 3) Grown-up / Refined and Defined Processes 4) Mature / Managed (continual improvement built-in) 5) Best-in-Class / Optimized By going through the process of breaking down predecessors, inputs and outputs a basic, high-level model can be created to use for multiple purposes. E.g.: - assessing where an organization, function or individual's current maturity - determining the desired "to-be" state and find current gaps - assess when is right to "outsource" vs "in-source" given the frequency and criticality, or gap/bridge to reach a certain level - can be used to create a roadmap for an organization, a function or individual to get to the desired state The purpose is to help organizations with high dependencies on quality data management to demystify the "digital transformation" journey while also being honest in how we assess ourselves and our desired outcomes. The reality is many people do not need to be a "5" in all areas. In some cases when a function is rarely used (~1-2 times per year) contracting an external organization at the right level (typically a 4 or a 5) on an "as-needed" basis may be ideal. Conversely, bringing on someone with the right experience to help manage through the change and adoption may be the right option when a higher competency is needed regularly to meet business objectives consistently. Simplifying the landscape of "digital" and breaking it down into its basic building blocks helps us all align our capabilities and needs in order to set a realistic roadmap that is easily communicable, making it easy to drive and adopt.
