Description

Over the last 2+ years, ExxonMobil initiated large upstream wide projects (which continues today) to digitize, and capture enhanced metadata from archived physical media and new incoming data. By leveraging service providers and local vendors like Katalyst Data Management (KDM) and employing the latest tools and technology, the projects provided visibility and value to previously difficult to find or unknown records and improved data quality and interoperability for current and future work. This paper, and talk, will highlight workflows, tools, and examples of technical data digitization “wins” that have added value to our Upstream business lines. Examples of “wins” will be provided from 3 ongoing digitization projects: 1. Hardcopy Scan and Metadata Capture Project: an effort to scan, digitize and capture enhanced metadata from 12M hardcopy (paper) documents. 2. Legacy Seismic Online Project: an effort to digitize ~1.5M tapes containing seismic records currently stored on various vintages of magnetic media in underground vaults. 3. Tape Operations Project: an effort to eliminate on premise hardware, and improve the speed and delivery of incoming data. In close partnership with KDM, XOM has been able to realize added value from 2M+ hardcopy documents, and 250k+ seismic tapes to date (as of Oct, 2019 – numbers to be updated for May 2020). In addition, KDM and XOM have worked to streamline workflows to deliver 3.5 TB of new data to BU end users. These projects have not been without challenges, and KDM will discuss some of the challenges, as well as innovative tools and workflows they have developed to deliver XOM digitized data. Tools include a live dashboard of the digitization effort, as well as metadata that easily identifies “found” data.
